If I ever meet the ignorant bureaucrat who decided it would be a good idea to limit lorries to 40mph on single carriageways...

Stuck behind on today for 20 miles, causing a huge tailback. Farm vehicles go slow enough for you to overtake, and they don't go very far anyway. But 40mph is a terrible speed: not fast enough to be endurable, not slow enough to be an easy pass on a twisty road - and my van doesn't know which gear to be in at 40, so transmission wear is increased and mpg reduced.

The lorry driver was also weaving around all over the place, clearly so bored out of his skull he could hardly concentrate. It was excruciating!!

Phew... sorry about that...

I find that very few lorry drivers stick to the 40mph speed limit, find that they go on average a good 10mph, you might have been unlucky, he might of been on overtime and spinning it out.

A10. I think some might be electronically limited? These two recent incidents were both Tesco lorries, and there was a sign on the back which I think said something like "For your safety this vehicle is limited to 40mph on single carriageways".

I dont think a transit will go much more than 40mph

Tosco trucks are limited to about 52/53 mph and some have Isotrack which alerts the planner if excessive speeds (their opinion, not mine) are seen. Try getting stuck behind one on the A9, get past him and low and behold ...... Asda truck.

I have come up with a simple means of stopping any issues related to ANY slow moving trafficalt text

Good idea ...... until the debris falls back on the carriageway ?

Isn't it weird how the limiter suddenly disables itself when you start to overtake them!

Ok Ray, you may think I haven't thought this thru and that all my idea does, is replace the truck with the remnants of said truck BUT its all about timing and distance.

It's a rather complex formula and one that i won't bore you with, but suffice to say that if you are at the correct distance behind the target when you pull the trigger, upon detonation of the target, the debris moves in an outwardly direction before falling back to earth.

If you have done your sums correctly, and you keep to the correct speed, you will in fact go through and past the ex truck before the debris falls back onto the carriageway. Indeed much of the debris will have been blown far from the carriageway and into nearby fields.

Before you think you may again have got me by suggesting there may be a crater involved in this scenario, NO Ray...it's about firstly, keeping the amount of explosive to a minimum thereby reducing the probability of craters and secondly, getting your aim right so that the explosion is more upwards and outwards, rather than downwards.

If you follow these simple steps you will have passed through the explosion, ex truck et all without even a scratch.

( I would strongly suggest you wear some sort of goggles....see below)

Right, they look like the sort of goggles someone working with an oxy cutter would wear so no problem obtaining them but where the hell can I obtain a grenade launcher ?? could always try Guntree I suppose ??

moray couriers

Just a thought but have you taken into account the blast area of increased (greatly) air pressure that radiates from point of explosion in all directions. You wouldn't be able to avoid that would you?

I really need a good reason for getting out more, I spend far too much time on these internet forums !! (If that isn't a non subtle hint to get more work for my van next week I don't know what is.)

Again Mr Moray, I think you forget that any explosion has its own fingerprint and can be tailored to do exactly what you want it to do. Done correctly the blast can actually be used to your advantage by "sucking" you through to the other side. Precision here is the key.

moray couriers

780

Granted, but you need to get to the sucking point at exactly the right time, ie. milliseconds and at the right velocity to take advantage of the opposite effect at the other side of the explosion site, ie. blast effect to push you away again. In other words you need to be too close for comfort IMO. Cant we just take our time on the road and realise there is always going to be a reason valid or otherwise to slow us down ? Much better than having to know the laws on physics or explosive qualities ...

I refer the honourable gentleman to the statement I made two posts before :-)

At the end of the day, when presented with a problem, or situation, some moan, some whinge, and some try to come up with answers.

If a rocket launcher seems a bit of an extreme measure for some, then by all means add your own solution. That's the whole point of a forum...sharing ideas

Personally I think mine is a bleeding good idea....sure, it may need a tweak here and there but there's no doubting it does rid us of slow moving vehicles

You need a blast so powerful that any debris is vaporised immediately. Like some sort of nuclear thingy. Haven't worked out the shockwave problem yet tho...

AJM sameday Couriers

You just need a vehicle with a bit of umpth for overtaking!!

Speed Couriers Nationwide Ltd

Thats all very well until you come across 2 x trucks side by side, one trying to overtake the other, when both are limited to the same speed

40mph is fast enough for anybody, just relax

Would any of you like to have the same conversation with the biker( riding to work - he was a artic driver out of magna park) minus a limb, now unemployed ,and nackered for life, and is suffering thru month 17 of the convorluted claim, against a speeding trucker driver, over hours and the now defunct company with void insurance, because the driver did not declare prior convictions. Would you be able to prove your argument that trucks need more speed.
