You all know of the story of George and the Dragon but do you really?

New evidence suggests that the Dragon in question was actually called George, and the Knight given the task of slaying him was called Dave.

But why was Dave given this task?

Well  it all stems back to a time long ago, a time so long ago infact, that it was before Dave or anyone else called Dave, or anyone called anything come to that. A time when most of Europe was covered in dense woodland and amongst the trees grew the humble sprout. What a lot of people don’t know about sprouts is that they are the most favourite snack of the Dragon. The side effect of their pleasure in the sprout as we all know is...flatulance.

Now back in the day, the day before mankind, this wasn’t a problem. It wasn’t a problem at all because the sheer quantity of trees was by far and away enough to overcome the bottom perfume of these Dragons due to the oxygen trees produce.

No, it only became a problem once man had established himself on this land, and had cut down swathes of forests for firewood, ship building, houses and to clear the land for farming.

This meant the natural balance that had existed for many more centuries than I can truly get across to you, had been destroyed, and that meant that the people living on the land had now to endure the stench of the Dragons flatulence.

Something had to be done.

The clean air act was drawn up and Dave was given the task of a Dragon Cull. Dave got together an army and off they went, on the trail of the Dragons, and told not to come back until the Dragons were no more. Although initially a successful campaign, it was taking too long. So long in fact that the Dragons had managed to organise themselves into an army of their own.

Dave remembers all too well the times the Dragons hit back at him and his army, so organised had the Dragons become that whole areas of Europe had become uninhabitable.

Dave returned with his depleted and demoralised army and reported that although initially successful, something more was needed.

It was decided that the only way was to tax the sprout, therefore making it unreachable to the Dragons. It was relisted as a luxury item, and as the Dragons had limited financial resources, over time it had its desired effect.

Dragon numbers had gotten so low that one day there was only one left, and that Dragon was called George.

By now public attitudes towards Dragons, and towards George inparticular, had changed.

With nice clean, fresh air and memories of the stench of the past subsiding, a few people felt sorry for George, so sorry infact that a new party was formed by Dave, Save the Dragon Party or more commonly the SDP. They rallied around and support for them grew.

It grew to such an extent that a new white paper was forced through Parliament.

Dave had realised that speed was of the essence before it was too late.We had gone too far, almost making the Dragon extinct, and for something that wasn’t really their fault in the first place. Thankfully it was realised before it was too late. George and Dave became the bestest of friends, although Dave never did remove his helmet in Georges presence, but George didn’t mind too much.

And now you know why the humble Sprout is now known as the Brussel Sprout.....the Bureaucracy of Brussels and the EU was, even then, causing controversy as it does today.
