Hi all

I was going through the forum and it seems common for work not to be covered and the bigger guys won't post work here now, I have quoted for work from here but don't get any feedback or jobs!
As a comparative newbie I and other newbies would really appreciate being guided a little after all we can help each other in the long term.
Info like advice on guide prices for jobs, waiting time, back runs etc. Then us 'newbies' can quote you guys better and then get your work covered, and not over quote resulting in your jobs not being covered. I personally would be happy to help anyone and hope others would help me when needed.

Help us 'newbies' to help you......or am I way off track?

it seems we have a bit of a chicken and egg syndrome goin on here.....i don't know how many up to date members mtvan has, but if jobs got bids then more jobs would be put on...."other" exchanges work because they have enuff members to ensure that 99% of any work put on there gets covered...sadly that can't be said of this site....yet.

Controllers don't want to waste their time, so will go to woteva site gets their job covered as soon as poss so he can move on to the next job.
If no one puts work on here...then clearly no one can bid....

as for wot price to bid?
I can only speak for myself but anything around the 70p per mile (small van) seems about right to me....75 at a push

I put a job from Oxford to EC2 today. and although apparently 518 text alerts went out we got no bids wotsoeva, so clearly something is wrong here....

It was covered elsewhere in 10mins

Where did you cover it?

Edit: Also that's 518 alerts, which includes emails. Still you'd hope for a few bids.

Speed Couriers Nationwide Ltd

ah i see....still suprised no one bid

Covered it on the big yellow i'm afraid....it works...hoping this one will again soon

Speaking for myself, if i see a job near me where there's 500 alerts for one job i dont bother bidding now. What's the point? I've never had a single reply on any of my bids. Presumably with all these alerts going out for one job the job is going for next to nothing!!

Website Admin

Thanks for the reply RGM. That's an interesting way of looking at it.

I will try to use some stats that are more meaningful. As mentioned he alerts sent means just that. It includes text and email alerts (some members receive both), as well as some notifications to our un-upgraded members to let them know about the work near them that they would be able to bid on (99% sure of this, will double check).

Website Admin

Incidentally, does Courier Exchange not show the alerts sent?

Ill be honest I dont have any confidence in this site what so ever, and in 6 months ive only had one job off it, im on CX and if im looking for work I look there, decent feedback etc gives you more confidence on wanting to bid for jobs.. just my opinion.

Website Admin

6679

So you're concerned about whether to trust the vendors? Great, thanks for the feedback.

Member feedback is in progress. How does the CX feedback work for you? Ideal or is there anything you'd change?

Speed Couriers Nationwide Ltd

I can't see what possible connection there is between the number of alerts and the price of a job if i'm honest.

Its all about gettin the job sold asap
There are times when i sell a job at a price i'm happy with, and then get a cheaper bid after i've sold it...thats just the way it goes.
Its not all about price....its about gettin the job covered quickly so i can move on to the next one.
If you're not going to bid because others may do, then i can't see what you're doing on any exchange site....thats just odd.

No cx don't show how many alerts went out....i can't see the point of it either.
If anything, its more annoying to know 518 texts/emails went out and not one subsequent bid came thru...

Speed Couriers Nationwide Ltd

feedback doesn't work

There's a thread on cx about it only today funnily enough
Someone whingin about a late payer was asked why the hell he didn't put the relevant feedback on so as to warn us all to avoid them.

I used a firm today with 42 positive feedbacks...who then took 2 1/2 hrs to do a 13 mile job in London...who i chased up no less than 4 times.

You're only as good as the last job you did

Are people scared about the comeback from leaving negative feedback?

on the "make an offer" page it should display the company phone number that is offering the work instead of what it show's now or as well of

I've bid on three and had two accepted. However, one was then lost as the vendor miscalculated the cu3s needed. For this reason I have bought a Transit Jumbo and am selling my (swb, low roof, fwd, 27k miles, two new tyres and second full service at 26k) 2010 Transit Limited.

When I saw the Crawley - Livingstone text yesterday I was actually approaching the the M25 turn-off for Crawley. However, I was on my way to look at a new van and it was Friday of course with not a great chance of getting a load back. Then again it was obviously meant for someone returning to Scotland and wouldn't have been worthwhile bidding anyway. A lot of people I've spoken to come upwith the same response to say, Oxford - London: 'They probably expect it to be covered for twenty quid!' So someone sitting at home in London isn't going to bother. As for those not getting an answer to a bid, it is obvious that your bid was undercut by someone else.

Speed Couriers Nationwide Ltd

Far too many cynics here

A bid not being accepted.....as stated earlier.....does NOT mean it neccessarily went for a cheaper price.....it MAY mean someone got their bid accepted 1st cos they were quick to respond....OR your bid may be exactly the same as someone elses....i had bids from NP44 to DL6 ranging from £155 to £220.....and sold it for £170 after sussing out who was closest.

Anyone who accepts silly quotes can't be suprised if the job then goes tits up...you get wot you pay for

P.S the Oxford to London went for £55

Morning all!

Now im relativley new to this site, and have placed pleanty of bids, to no avail! I have a lwb van but it just seems all the jobs i have gone for are backload prices ;0(

I agree with the comments of someone earlier saying about how many alerts there are sent out, i kind of think well if that was sent out 20 mins ago its gone, if it was sent to that many people, i dont know if thats aimed at generic members or targeted to the area of where the collection is required from, I.E if its a collection from Bristol then the alerts should be sent soley to a catchment area of say 20miles to Bristol alone, and the job available for all to see on the site incase your heading to that area or near it??

Maybe somebody can confirm this?

PTC Sameday

I'm sure the texts are sent to everyone who ticked the box of the required vehicle regardless of where they're located. For instance I'm located in Kent but was in Liverpool when getting texts for swb and small van jobs from and to all over the UK

Regarding that Oxford to London job, you're right - it was a cynic of the highest order who made the twenty quid comment!

There are some very good vendors on here, BSG and Pronto to name 2, the feedback system on cx has its flaws, however you can build up a decent feedback rating which might help you win jobs, I do look at feedback of vendors on cx before quoting, and yeah there are some I wouldn't work for, so for that purpose it works for me, im more interested in building my own rating up to become more successful, but then im new to this relatively after coming from many years of multi dropping. One thing I don't understand is the arguments on what a backload or hotshot is, surely if you job fits in with what you want to do then you should quote accordingly, I would never do a job for just the fuel money home and I think this is where the logistics world is let down, were all in it to make money and jobs are subbed accordingly, the vendor will always make their share, hence why they ask for quotes for the job to be done.

Speed Couriers Nationwide Ltd

Personally i think "backloads" are a piss take

If someone is honestly really really quoting their client megacheap, then puttin it on as a backload purely to help said client out, then thats one thing...BUT i very much doubt it...i think it's more likely that the vendor is trying to make more profit at the expense of the subbie.
If we all go down th route of backload pricing then who is EVER going to quote the right price.
Maybe "backload" should read "ebay" or something...then we all know its someone trying to get something somewhere at a price they can afford who don't normally use sameday couriers.

If people want to bid low then that's entirely up to them...BUT you need to look at the bigger picture.. we need to stop the rust bucket uninsured non english speaking drivers preventing real couriers from making a living. If someone bids 50p a mile you have to ask yourself why....either its because they have something else onboard....fine as long as you're told thats the case, or they're shit.

A bid of £12.50 from Potters Bar (EN4) to Heathrow (TW6) is not going to get anything from me cos thats just bleeding silly....(yes...its true)

The bigger issue is that this industry isn't regulated...at all...so we have to self regulate...which is down to the vendors ensuring that who they use is someone they want to be associated with, has the revelant insurance, and treats the job with the respect it deserves.
Any driver whilst subbing is an ambassador for the vendor AND his customer..and its down to subbies to act responsibly too....don't take a job on if you can't do it in the time frame...always let the vendor know of any problems etc etc

Being a Courier is a lot more than merely buying a van and getting a satnav, and I think its up to all of us to ram home that point and get these charlatans out of the industry

rant over

I don't know about helping others but it would help me a lot if someone put some work on 'ere that either originated in my area or in the areas where I am clearing. I usually get the netbook out after I've dropped somewhere and find there's bugger all anywhere near me.

The occasional opportunity to quote on something would be nice.

Here here Rob!! Couldnt of said it any better if i tried!

I feel at the end of the day a job to A) to B) is your rate, this backload thing is crap, its still your time, effort running cost regardless, by all means be it if its for the same customer something coming back do it cheaper, but so many i call to qoute are looking for 100 mile jobs for £30/£40. i value my work, and effort i put in to be a reliable courier, and feel my rate reflects the service you will recieve.

Still these things are sent to try us!

Thanks guys for the feedback it is very valid most of us are professional drivers not the minority who give us a bad name.

I like others take this job very seriously and have all the necessary insurances and act properly for the person we sub for.  Its called RESPECT and we should all respect each other and the vendors should help us to eradicate the unscrupulous drivers. If we all work together and act and drive professionally we can shake the mental 'white van man' syndrome, and get a decent rate that we deserve.

AND....I also think that some jobs put on here are already SOLD....i had a job i subbed out (not thru any exchange site i hasten to add) that appeared on here!!!!....so it was never open for bids...i also saw one put on at 1649 and by 1650 appeared as SOLD.

Now it may make the site look busier but it's going to piss an awful lot of drivers off if they waste their time biddin on a job that was never really OPEN FOR BIDS.

The reason?....i think some vendors are using the site for their invoicing, therefore are obliged to book the job on the site

I could be wrong.......
