What on earth happened to the motorways today? Perfect driving conditions and accidents causing traffic jams in all directions! What a mess!

People drive far beyond their capabilities. I drive around 70mph and I was the slowest on the motorways today!!. (M6/M40/M4). Plus, you can guarantee a lorry is involved. The driving standards of lorry drivers nowadays is abysmal! (And I don't rate the majority of van drivers either!)

The sun brings out a lot of people that get up to 50 mph in the middle lane and then put on blinkers. Must be infuriating if you are driving a truck that is limited to 56 mph and can't go round them.

True. Then they drive 6 inches up the car's arse.

I was on m6 plodding along at about 56 mph not in no rush, came up to this massive line of lorrys in slow lane so i pulled in to middle lane kept going must have been for about amile still passing lorries, caught up with traffic in middle, pulled into fast last speeded up over too, and there sitting in middle lane was a driver doing 49mph in the middle lane holding everyone up. Pulled over to slow lane slowed right down to 50 for about 5 mins and this driver was just sittting there and just didnt bother to move in to the slow lane. What a knob..

Yeah saw loads of them yesterday. The only way to tow a caravan is at 60 mph so you are slightly faster than the lorries, not 52 mph so you are slightly slower. As for the middle lane hoggers, if you get passed on the inside by a yellow boxer then you've been there too long and you are going too slow.

Which is why they can now be fined for hogging the middle lane and for tailgating.

I think a lot of the driving issues of today stem from the quality of the cars of today. When i was growing up you felt what 70mph felt like, nowadays its all so quiet and smooth doing 100 feels lame, and i don't think a lot realise the speed they're doing, or how easy it is to kill youself and others... Plus as there's more trafic and less room there's bound to be more accidents and incidents.

If any legislation ever needed to be introduced it needs to make it illegal to prevent a speed restricted vehicle from running at it's safe legal limit by any vehicle subject to a higher limit.

I think some couriers are guilty of this by offering fast deliveries, and promising deadlines that can only be met by breaking the law. I am afraid todays society wants everything doing yesterday.

Like Mr Speed I passed my test in a Ford Escort MK1. At 70mph it was"shake rattle and roll"

My first five vehicles were... 1949 Jowett Bradford, 1956 Morris Minor Traveller 1000, 1959 Ford Pop (6 volt), Commer 15cwt "minibus" and Renault 4. What's 70mph?

Nice, the 6 volt Pop would be driving in its own shadow at night if there was anything behind it. I also passed in a Mk1 Escort, my first car was an Avenger 1300 which blew up at about 70mph one day.

Ah, fond memories. In 1971 I hired a new Avenger for three weeks, for £60, and drove it to Athens and back, land route all the way. Lovely drive, I was able to cruise at 85mph on the German Autobahns without hanging on for grim death. Petrol in the UK was an outrageous 7p a litre - you could get it in Austria for half that price!

Wasn't Joanna Lumley a New Avenger?

Coming back from Swansea this morning I avoided all the motorways, went across the Brecon Beacons and Mid Wales, little traffic, great weather, beautiful, one of those days when its a pleasure to drive.

And when that guy sat is in lane 2 at 49 mph on an otherwise empty 3 lane highway how many times can you circle him before he notices... (overtake at 70 mph then reduce to 45 mph in lane 1 to let him overtake you, all at a safe distance of course) 7 is my limit before I gave up and carried on at 70 in lane 1

That's one way of passing time on a motorway :-)
