I'm interested although not yet made the leap. I am running a van with car trailer at moment. I want to focus more on this and get away from the furniture we do at the moment.

We have been considering buying a large car trailer for this market and we are based between Nottingham & Derby. Do you have any anticipated levels of business in mind??

be warey about buying car trailers to pull behind vans as from december this year you require an operators licence and all the hastle that it entails however 4x4 vehicles are exempt at this time just had to sell my boxer van to buy 4x4 another fantastic new euro law

New Trailer laws came into force on Dec 04 2011...small trailer exemption abolished...O' Licence now required if towing a trailer for H&R...plus you will be subject to same Laws as an HGV Car Transporter carrying 9 vehicles...you will need Operating Premises...A Service Contract with a Garage for regular Trailer maintenance...Tacho if you don't already have one...Driver CPC (Fleet manager)  is another requirement...advert in local press for O' Licence application...so any objections can be made by Council or Locals.

Traffic commissioners will not grant you an O' Licence if you work from home address.
If you do have premises...the O' Licence will be on your vehicle & trailer...meaning your vehicle must be kept at the operating premises when not working...cannot be used to drive home in.
Cost of O' Licence...£250 non refundable for application...£391 for Licence...renewable every 5 years...CPC £1500 - £2000 depending on where you go...plus regular servicing costs...premises...etc etc.
Following a very brief consultation sometime in January 2012 The Traffic Commissioners decided the current fees which are applicable to HGV's would not be altered for the small trailer owner...in other words you pay the same whether it's a small trailer or an artic trailer.

4X4's are exempt...BUT...only those classed as "Dual Cab"...or in other words a 4X4 which has fixed rear seats and can carry passengers...there is a whole list of what qualifies it as an exempt dual cab 4x4...I have a link to it somewhere if any one suffers from insomnia and want's something to send them to sleep.
Also you will still only be exempt from O' Licencing up to 3500kgs...a 4x4 is not counted so it will be your trailer weight only...if it goes over 3500kgs you will still need an O' Licence.

A transitional period to June 2012 has been granted to allow retrospective applications for O' Licencing...it can take about 12 weeks to process...the unofficial VOSA stance is that anyone being pulled within the period leading up to June will be told to make an application asap and should not face any fines but it will be up to the officer concerned...after June...they will hammer you...1st time £300 fine...2nd £300 fine...3rd £300 fine and vehicle could be impounded.

It may be a Euro Law BUT the UK have had 2 years (2009) to prepare for it...yet it was only placed before the relevant committee on 07 November 2011...less than a month before it became Law.
The Euro Law also made clear derogation (exemption) for the small or micro business towing a small trailer to remain exempt...but left it to the discretion of the relevant Govt to keep the exemption or abolish it...the UK Govt elected to abolish the exemption and include anyone who operated for H&R regardless of trailer size...another stealth tax.

How do I know all this...because I had a niche business using a small car transporter, which was doing very well...until the Trailer Laws were changed...from that point my main income ceased...I researched every area of this new Law and have had numerous verbal and written exchanges with VOSA, The Traffic Commissioners and The Dept for Transport on the subject.
The joke of it all is...every response I have had is qualified with "I must emphasise that this is the view of this Department and is not intended to be a strict interpretation of the law, Only a Court of Law is able to give a legally definitive interpretation".

So if you are towing a trailer (even if the GTW is less than 3500kgs) for H&R without an O' Licence...you know the score.

yes our goverment really looks after us i was in the same situation was running a very reliable van and hired in trailers for car work had loads of scope for return loads etc with van i got stopped by vosa in december and was told i would be breaking the law if i carried on towing with the van like you i scoured the small print and found the exemption for 4x4s so sold the van bought a pajero 2.8 and in the space of about 2 months its almost wiped me out its needed new turbo lift pump and now the rear diff is gone im on the verge of selling both due to this stupid law i mean who in their right mind would lay out all that money on an operators licence to run a small van and trailer or a pick up and trailer you would simply go to a 7.5 toner or hgv how many sole traders working from home has this law wiped out. the goverment rant on and on about getting the economy going then go and allow stupid laws like this come in for me if anything else goes wrong the 4x4 and trailer will be listed on e bay and ill be joining the thousands on the dole. just who are they going to screw once the transport industry has been bled dry???
