As a subbie you are your own boss!

Therefore you can run your own business as you see fit.

10am for your 1st job?...at least you seem to be getting regular work.

As a subbie you can do whatever you want BUT if you become unavailable more than you are available to the firm you currently sub for, they may well move onto someone else or you may well find someone with work that fits into wot you want.
If i were you i'd ask the firm you work for if there's any chance of gettin some earlier stuff, either that or get up later!!!

Register with as many as you can, i'm the same, my first job usually comes along about 9.30.

Although the last 10 days have been dead apart from Thursdays and Fridays.

60% of a couriers job I reckon is communication!
if you let people know then your not dropping them in the crap,
if you let the controller know you are off on a job he maybe able to find you a return or if time allows a co-load,

Thank you for the comments i get paid for the round trip so if i get a return with someone else can they get mardy? What i'm thinking is i need to get what i can.

Not really.
Yes you may get paid on a round trip basis but once you have delivered and there isn't a return then whatever you do is irrelevant to the company you did the delivery for.
For example if you did say a London from Leicester for me once you have delivered you have fulfilled your obligation and are free to stay in London for the evening or look for a backload,
 it's your choice.

If however you were tasked to come back with a return then this would be factored into the price accordingly and you would be aware upon accepting the job.

Being paid round trip is a sneaky way for the "big boys" to get away with not paying you for a return trip. 99% you'll be asked to do a job from A to B with nothing coming back, but if they get something close to B coming back to A they'll not pay you anything. Tiz a swindle and I for one would never entertain it.

You are self employed aren't you??.

Do they pay you a retainer? Do they guarantee you a minimum per week?

I already know the answer is no so you have to tell them you are unavailable after you accept a job.

I'm going to tell the manager who controls the place about this face to face cause i think that takes the p#ss i could have a private customer then what u cant do it we aint got drivers. They give alrite runs but i think i could do better.

When I was working for the big boys this was often the case even when they knew very well I had already co loaded their job into London (they simply didn't pay enough for exclusivity) however I have often negotiated with a subby to work out jobs based on half the round trip mileage  as the collection point was 20-30 miles from base but the delivery point was closer to base than the collection point but I wont expect them to bring anything unexpected back for nothing.

Agree that as a subbie you are free to work for who u want to, but if u are doing regular work for one firm surely u owe them some allegience thats not to say you cant take on other work it must come down to your own organising abbilities. Why though would you feel that you need to tell the guy you are working for on a regular basis that you are working elsewhere as long as you are still keeping his deliveries going then its nothing to do with him, if however you are screwing him around dont be surprised if he no longer needs your services.

The way we work is simple.

Anyone who wants to tell us they're empty in ???? or have just picked up a load going to ???? gives us the ability to give them something comin back, that we can give them a co load and/or that they're no longer available to us.
Communication is the key, whether that's directly to us, or by letting everyone know on cx or mtvan.
I don't expect anyone to be at my beck and call, but if i know what you're doing, i'm more able to do something about it.

A subbie has no need to apologise for being unavailable either through going shopping or on a job for someone else - I will simply contact the next on my list.

Speed Couriers Nationwide Ltd

True, but trying to be available is important to get repeat business don't you think?

If you get knocked back too many times you're just not going to bother with them after a while are you....works both ways for me
