Hi,

I'm 20 years old and got a quote from one insurance to insure a LWB transit.

They quoted me £6,650. This included GIT, Public liability.

Am I going to get better than this or should I just live with it?

At that price live "in" it

So Martin you have to earn £6650 just to cover your Insurances, and then you would have to earn more to cover the cost of the vehicle and the rest of its running costs like tax, tyres, fuel, servicing and then your wage.. Looking at it like this, is it worth it? for the competition, cost and hours you have to put in to break even.

Just think that's £18.21 per day every day for 365 days whether you have a booking or not!

Maybe a small van for a few years may be a little cheaper, Just a thought.

It's a lot of money, but not an unsurprising figure given your age.

Our policy covers any driver, no age restrictions so might be worth investigating if you can get something similar.

This would require someone older, with good licence and no claims to set the policy up mum/dad maybe?

I tried getting a policy like any driver but not a lot of companies do new policies, just renewals. The figure is the exact same believe it or not regardless of whether I have a 62 plate transit LWB or merc sprinter or an 02 citreon berlingo!

Crazy!

I think they are trying to tell you to find a different job for the next 6 years.

Before you take the plunge why not try out multi dropping with one of the home delivery firms 1st?

they pay approx 60p per parcel delivered which on average could bring you in £50 per day on one local postcode. Try www.Myhermes. Co. Uk You wont even need a van just a car(preferably an estate or hatchback)

They run a special insurance for their drivers which i think is about £3 per week!

Doing this kind of multi-dropping will give you a feel for stop start driving and then you may decide to go full steam alone or decide a life on the road its not for you

That is a good suggestion but please be aware that the standard of POD required by UKMail will be much higher than that accepted by Hermes. ie. You will not be able to get away with an "it's over the wall and into the pond for me" attitude with a mainstream next-day parcel co.
