Tad too high for whom?
Also who are 'they'?

One of the ways of keeping costs down is to use the most cost effective vehicle for the job.
A high volume EXLWB can carry large volumes of air but will be beaten on running cost for carrying 1200 kgs of steel based product by a 2900 Vauxhall Vivaro.
In another post you mention the "dreaded 8 week inspection" - is your vehicle over 3500 kg gross weight so that you have to run under Tacho regs with your vehicle.
Many of the jobs posted on this site get covered by vehicles returning to base and so the bidder is often happy only to cover his or her fuel cost for the day (sometimes less)

What is this reslove you talk about? Is it a new addition to the karma sutra?

As said it depends on what your doing. For getting all your work it will not be worth doing the majority of the time. But for instance if your down in London and returning empty then anything coming back that covers the days fuel makes you trip down all profit

What would you have done if someone accepted one of your "slashed" quotes?

Ok cheers for the feed back. This is all new to me. I get the van safety checked every 8 weeks and serviced. It keeps on top of everything. Then when it comes mot time ive got no nasty stuff creep up on me. Happy vans last longer hahahahahha
Cant fathom why you would quote lower than what you want anyway? Its common knowledge there are numpties who run around for nothing! Most go out of business fairly quickly, it is not hard being a busy fool.

I hope so!
I've only been trading since april this myself. I found that it hard to get a decent rate for small van jobs, so I now run in LWB van. Since I upgraded, I now find myself a lot more busier and vendors do pay a decent rate. It does help by being on Courier Exchange aswell as mtvan. I find that mtvan has limited work around my area, but I have done work for vendors around my area in the past and they contact me direct, With a decent rate. I won't do work for less than my rate that I have set for myself, no matter how they try to haggle me. Some do try tho

There seems to be less competition for LWB vehicles, hence the rates quoted tend to be higher. We have a shortage of owner drivers with these type of vehicles and sometimes we do struggle to cover them.
The rates quoted are higher because they cost more to run than a car on personal or business insurance as they usually have all the correct insurances in place. Also because most of your work is for cars
