I made a small pallet delivery to a large earthmoving firm in Uttoxeter (can't name in case of legal reasons) this morning and was kept waiting for 2 hours before the forklift was available because the driver went to lunch at 1pm. I arrived at 12-20pm 40 minutes before lunch.

Now i know the subject of pricing for back-loads has been covered ,but has anyone considered waiting time at firms like this who consistently keep drivers waiting in excess of an hour? and how would you price it?

Not JCB?? I charge any waiting time over 30 minutes either picking up or collecting at £15/hr. I always phone the customer when there's a delay and its amazing how they can "pull strings" when they know they're being charged! I would think that, assuming you contacted your customer, you can legitimately charge 2 hours waiting time. PS. First 30 minutes are free but if I wait 1 hour I charge for 1 hour. That's how DHL, etc. work it.

I've never had to charge for waiting, but my T&Cs say first 15 mins free (which I don't really count) then £5 per 15 mins thereafter. I know it's expensive, but I want it to be a deterrent to the customer, as waiting can really screw with a tight schedule.

That's exactly what it is camvan, a deterrent. Looking at the above though, I'm not deterring them enough!

Them lot are always making you wait...or they'll tell you you're at the wrong plant until someone tells em otherwise All you can do is let the customer know whats going on, and charge the waiting time.

I have no idea why some shy away from charging it....

If someone's making you wait...charge em...simple

I used to load often out of xxx at Uttoxeter doing abnormal loads all over the continent and sometimes arrived to find out that the machine was still being manufactured, but usually quickly rectified by sending another of the same type. Waiting time or whether the company got paid didn't matter to me as it was of no concern of mine as I was just one of the guvners 'serfs'.

Yes this can be a huge problem, they soon moan if your late for collection, I reckon 15 mins free then £6.25+vat for every 15 there after, BUT like most things in business communication is the key you must tell your client of the situation then it is up to them if they get things sorted or they pay the money, unless you are picking up from an NHS hospital then you can almost wright the day off!!!

This issue is a big pain in the ass basicly its more important to charge high for this that it is any other cost factor

The job is done as agreed you have gone all that distance to be held up for hours basicly thats your time and before we even talk about costs You dont want to be waiting there nobody has a right to expect you to invest hours from your life in this waiting around !!. So you should charge what you want to charge you dont mind working for a fair price but most of the time you are being held there against your will . You cant just throw the pallet out the back door and shout "kiss my ass" !!! So I have always felt that time is so valuable and more so now Im older and if people wish to keep you somewhere against your will or your drivers will they should pay a hefty price as there in most cases is no need for this !!!!!

£25 for 1st hour, £15 for every subsequent hour. Always make sure to call as soon as you pull in if it has the potential of waiting to be unloaded then no quibbles.

Best one yet was almost 60 hours in southern France...
