thanks
Charge at a day rate work out your fuel & how many drops + distance being close to Xmas u can get away with charging stupid money as the multi drop parcel companies will be willing to pay as there desparte to get there routes coverd.
Deffo a day rate....a lot easier to deal with than how many drops you did....and base it on a 10 hour day....that way if it goes over you can charge extra
add the cost of a new starter motor and a new wig!!!!
simple answer is as much as possible!!!!!
There are some Yodel depots listed on mtvan.
I pulled my vans out of it after Christmas this year .
We always did it in one form or another on the permant rounds I rented the vans on long term rental from Newtown Rentals in Reditch .They went bust about 18 monthsago and that caused a problem but thats for another day . Mr Springer is right it takes it out of your van hence the rental of vans . Its not just repair costs thats the tip of the ice berg its the costs of transhipping getting another van catching up the effect goes on for day !!!
Last year a company on CX went bust in Wakefield so I was offered some better night work and we went in that direction instead. I did enjoy the multidroping but as you get older I dont think its a good idea those of you on here that are over 50 will know what I mean . Getting in the van once a day is an effort 80 times a day is impossible !!
I pulled my vans out christmas last year if was this year I would sell you the lottery numbers
NVR were taken over by Hitachi Capital. We had 2 vans from them and it was a seamless takeover, no problems. Not with them now however as decided to buy different vans.
what would you recommend to charge for a day rate?
Seriously?
A lot of thought is needed before you get into multi dropping as it isn't for everyone.
Yes Rob it has been made easier with the cigerette lighter map thing !!!
This has been marred by the fact that scanners have been introduced in the last ten to fifteen years ..Something that does my head in and cancels out anything gained from sat nav!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My best advice is to go out with a driver for a couple of days to see if your like it
i do all ready offer multidrop but i charge per drop but is thinkin to charge a day rate but dont know what to charge
If you charge per drop already then you already know the answer to your question.
i am assuming that when u do multidrop pricing you more or less know the mileage involved? or the amount of drops they are expecting to do, if you dont how do you work out a fuel bill, driver day rate is straight forward.
Hello Fastback
The problem is drivers pay is not that straight farward and we have seen quite a few disaters !!
I think somebody here calls them empire builders !! Some fool calls himself a company takes on a chunk of rounds and puts ownerdriver on the job . Then we have the other young fool who employs driver on the books and does not even understand he has to factor in holiday pay sickness pay extra hassle costs the list goes on . !!!
But thats another thread for another quiet day when its raining
I've agreed to a week of multidropping this week, on a self-employed basis. I'd done a little bit before but not for a full day and not more than one day at a time. It's flippin hard work! You spend half your day wandering round an old folks home looking for someone who isn't in, or googling someone's address because they've mistyped it, or driving round an unpeopled warehouse looking for Goods In which isn't signposted.
Yesterday i received less than minimum wage. Today i did 48 drops which worked out around £7.60 an hour profit (before insurance, tax etc) but i reckon if i hadn't mafe a few errors (still learning the area) that might have been nearer £9ph. Considering the long hours and the sheer faff, i'll think twice before complaining about same day rates again!
Nevertheless i intend to stick at it for this week at least (as agreed). It would be interesting to see how efficient at it i can become.
Just a bit of advice for you if you go long term get your area set in stone i started with yodel at £1.25 a parcel was doing approx 100/120 parcels per day start at 7 finshed by 2 £20-£25 fuel then they double the route changed it to £1 per drop so you could be carrying 5 boxes of argos flatpack hence why i left just be careful thats why most depots are going o/d now cos there own drivers only do 40 drops per day
How on earth did you manage 100 drops in 7 hours?! It would take me half that time just to load the van! I clearly need some more practice... I'm getting paid more per drop, but that's probably because many of them are large items.
Built up area where i live and as i mentioned above so where 3/4/5 drops to 1 address but the rates got changed from per parcel to per drop photocopy a map of your route and just put a highlight mark on it for each drop then work from your map some companys can do you a drop list i know citylink can yodels was set up in the scanner its worth spending that bit longer setting your van up in the depot than just throwing them on lad next to me was doing 200/230 parcels approx 190 drops but he was a machine
Multi dropping isn't for the feint hearted
I don't think many realise quite how much hard graft it is, and depending who you're working for, how much of a headache it can be with wrong postcodes, mispelt addresses, phone calls asking you to do a collection when you've finished that area a couple of hours ago. Deadlines that are impossible to meet, not to mention trying to find the box that you know you loaded on but fucked if you can find.
Its a skill, and one i think many really don't acknowledge, so price it accordingly
We used to supply several drivers on a daily basis to two different multi nationals, and one also had agency drivers as well. To see an agency driver coming back with half his load still undelivered, whilst ours were empty.
You get what you pay for but alas, many no longer value actually getting the job done.
We no longer supply drivers for multidropping because the calibre of driver I would want to send in, to show what we're made of, would be unaffordable at todays rates
To see what's happened in the overnight, multi dropping side of our industry should be a warning to all of us in the sameday side of the industry.
One thing i've learned - bring baby wipes and don't wear light colours. It's dusty work.
Take a roll of bin bags so if you can safeplace it doesnt matter if its raining you can leave it at back door then
