In the interest of being accommodating, I would like to be able to offer as many payment options to customers as possible without it costing me too much.

I can particularly see a need to be able to accept credit/debit card payments.

What are the options out there that I could use?

Which would you recommend to use/avoid?

For occasional use, something like PayPal or google checkout would be easiest. PayPal is more widely known but we had lots of problems with fraud, google seemed better.

If you are taking frequent payments then a dedicated provider would be better. We use worldpay without any problems.

We use a virtual terminal on a PC in the office - no machines to pay for just 2.3% fee - with this company

We use Barclaycard EPDQ virtual terminal. £10 per month and 1.9%,but we don't accept AMEX. no contract either, I also have the program on my laptop at home for out of hours calls.

The problem with paypal is that people can claim non delivery or service and recall the payment, This freezes your account and causes problems. Even though the job has been completed succesfully.

I would not touch Paypal with a barge pole. I had so many charge backs from people claiming their card was stolen, after goods had been delivered. Paypal and the police are not interested. Cost me several hundreds until I closed my Paypal account.

I agree that Paypal does seem to heavily look out for the buyer rather than the seller. We don't have too much trouble with it here though (we use it as our payment mechanism on mtvan).

Yes it's great when dealing with bona fide customers but when the guy on the other end of the phone is unknown to you it is fraught with danger. My last charge back was done by the cardholder himself, via my website via Paypal, with no interaction from me, but Paypal still reversed the payment and charged me £14 for the privilege. I still had to pay my "subbie".

I have never had a problem taking cards with paypal.

What were the reasons for doing the charge back then? I'd imagine if you promise something you don't deliver on which may or may not be any fault of your own then you may be leaving yourself open to a charge back. About three weeks ago we did a forgotten passport to Heathrow, I did tell the customer that time was against us and it was 50/50 whether we got it there in time for him, he was paying by card so I asked him to respond on his phone to an email I sent him that he understood the risk that we may not make it there on time, the biker did make it but that's not so easy to gauge times in a van.

Mk i have had numerous dealings with pay-pal as i operate an ebay account too. Unfortunately i have had numerous "claims" for goods not received even though i had them tracked. The claim-back system is open to so much abuse and as soon as someone makes a claim against you then paypal take your money ....and eventually give it back to the claimant as that's whom they wish to keep happy Their systems are based outside of the U.k and if you find yourself having to contact them ,be prepared to talk to someone in Manilla or the Gambia who talks English but Doesn't understand English . When it works its fine but when it doesn't it stinks!

A couple of years ago i bought a yamaha keyboard on ebay and paid via paypal, The keyboard arrived damaged and i sent it back via DHL tracked and as we were also contracting to DHL we had better access to the tracking info. Anyway as the paypal claim proceeded i had an email from paypal stating that i had not sent the goods back and they had found in favour of the seller and gave him the money, So in essence the seller got his machine back and the cash for it. This dragged on and on and many times they said i had given incorrect tracking info even though i had the information on screen in front of me showing his signature accepting the keyboard back.

Anyway after around 8 months they said as a gesture of goodwill they will re imburse me for the loss.

As this was going on my account was also frozen.

Never again will i use paypal.

No creditcard merchant can stop someone using a bogus card, or someone saying it wasn't delivered, wasn't them that ordered you etc etc....it happens whatever system you use so be careful when taking creditcard jobs.

Did they ring on a mobile?

Is the pick up address from a high value biz such as from the Plumbing, Building or Metal industry?

Have they arranged to meet you in a carpark or garages near to the delivery address?

When you get a card authorised it DOES NOT mean its not a scam

You can get it taken back several months later, so be warned

A guy sold a load of HiFi equipment to a bogus creditcard user...I warned him but not before he'd lost 3 1/2 K, a metal company sold 10k of copper to a bogus creditcard user...it happens all the time, unless you know what to look for

Steve Ive just had a chargeback under code 83 back in Aug 12, merchant not present and not received the goods! With a £14 fee, Reason customer cancelled and got shirty when he could not obtain expensive goods in Harrogate and cancelled our service (tried scamming the shop) they did a bank check over the phone regarding the same card he used to pay us ....so recently the chargeback was returned in my favour and the fee was eventually paid 2 weeks ago by PP as I complained to the FSA... but now shady about using PP hence iZettle (you say whats the difference, the difference being once bitten twice shy) and if paying by visa he can enter his card details into his own phone. So end result got everything back and not out of pocket :-) but a bloody inconvenienced.

You are ofcourse talking about selling things on eBay not paying for courier work, I've used PP now for a few years and never had a charge back for courier work
