A £290m scheme to turn the hard shoulder into a fourth lane on parts of the M1 could cost lives, a senior police officer has claimed.

The changes are to be made between junctions 32a and 35 in South Yorkshire and 39 to 42 in West Yorkshire.

Read what officer diddle has to say about 4 lanes... Maybe he's never driven on the M6 M4 M25 M8 etc.

We are a tiny Island with too many vehicle, they shoild be looking at ways of reducing the amount of vehicles on our roads, it's an expensive easy option.

I agree.

It almost up to us here so I will sit and watch. I don't think its necessary yes its busy but exactly at what point do you stop building. Ie in ten years time we have 8 overcrowded lanes! Do we build more and have 20?

Maybe as responsible businesses we should be the leaders in staggered journey times. I dont know how many members are here 1000? If we ourselfs made a commitment to run at night where possible and we have an average of 3 vans running per member that 3000 vehicles at least having their activities assessed I feel the answer should be towards moving goods at night

I would gladly run at night much more relaxing.

The problem with improving infrastructure is you're actually creating a problem, not solving one.

If you improve motorways, or build a new faster railway line, you get people commuting from further away, that pushes up house prices, increases local traffic, so you need more roads, then the retailers move in, and build yet another out of town retial park, and that needs stock which comes via the new road you've just built, so you need more roads and so on, and so on...it never ends

The M25 was built to solve a problem and all it did was create one

It had reached capacity within 3 years of opening

So what do town planners and local councils do?

Build Lakeside shopping centre AND 5 miles down the road Bluewater shopping centre... Madness or what i like to call it Corruption and Greed

The south east is now just a concrete jungle of roads, characterless housing estates, people rushing around getting nowhere extremely quickly, and for what?

And if we learn nothing at all, the rest of the UK will follow

Lets put tolls on all the major routes... Congestion charging like Manchester council tried, Charge you in the morning for driving to work and then charge you again for driving home at night. Do this in every town and City, Increase the VAT on Fuel Including gas, But not on Heating oil etc. Double the Road fund licence on everything with more than 2 wheels

Wow. I've never seen such a sensible discussion about road use and the growth of infrastructure! Rob and Bob, you're absolutely right.

Here's a book I keep meaning to read (but please order it from your local bookshop if you can!)

And I also agree with higher VAT on fuel, so long as it is coupled with an reduction in annual road tax. I think encouraging people to drive less is a more effective way of targeting pollution than taxing based on vehicle choice.

If all this tolls and higher VAT on fuel can wait until i retire, then i'm all for it...

Now retirement is getting closer It something I no longer want and have decided to go on for as long as I can. So you might want to care as you may delay your retirement plans
