Hi,

I've read a few of the forums about how bad specific companies are. I've been unemplyed for 18 months and my family have all chipped in to get me a van so I can start out as a courier. Now I'm reading all these bad things I'm worried their money has been wasted. Everyone has mentioned the bad guys but who are the good? Also is it worth upgrading my account to see the jobs posted on this site? I am really keen to just get working but don't want my desperation to lead to exploitation! Please advise.

Everyone will tell you how hard it is, it is but it's up to you. Get networking all your local couriers, upgrade to pro. Make sure your paperwork is in order. Work hard, good luck.

My advice would be not to let yourself get talked into marketing contracts with people like Yell (now hibu) or ufindalocal. I started in May 2012 and thought that you had to spend money to make money, so foolishly spent a sizeable part of my income on bad marketing. Networking, direct marketing and getting repeat business (nice business cards are worth the investment) are far more cost-efficient. Good luck!

Zenith is so right, keep your overheads lower than a snakes testicles and you have a fighting chance of getting through the first 2-3 years, please also bear in mind that there are busy times and slack times, we are hopefully coming out of a slack time and we should start seeing an increase in business until half term or what ever it is these days, if you have 2 months money as a buffer then your doing OK

Hi Jemvan.

Firstly welcome, I would look at your profile to start with, It is really poor and you need to sell yourself. Fill in all the relevant information correctly so other members can then decide to use or NOT use your services.

Nobody can see your address or even what vehicle you have.

Take a look at other members profiles and you will get the idea

Just a pointer.

Thanks for the words of encouragement Mr Springer we have been enjoying the slack time for the past 5 years!

I also think that it was a bad idea starting but your here now and any time wasted on questioning yourself weather that was right or wrong is wasted and you cant do that because you have a lot of other more important things to do!

I would take notice of warnings on the internet but always remeber mostly its the bad stuff that makes it on here the rest of time its probably not worth talking about!

I agree wit the rest talk to as many people in the industry get the word out Look smart always answer your phone by available all the time if you can. Remember its worth making sacrifices out of ours for good contacts. This whole thing needs to be the most important thing in your life for the next couple of years if oyu want it to work.

Get a good understanding of self employment the goverment offer free training for start ups they may not appear to be usfull and are quite boaring but it might keep you on the right side of the revenue!

Ensure you provide your customers with proper invoices as too many couriers lose work as they are cowboys when it comes to invoicing!

Finally no one else id going to give you a job get this right and it could be the best opportunity you get. Good luck I really hope you do make it!

^^^ This a million times.

You have provided a false name and address! Are you one of those bad guys not wanting to give themselves away? Nobody will trust you if they don't know who you are.

When I was filling out my details I thought it was just for signing in purposes and didn't want any junk mail. I will sort out my profile. I have had an invitation from Rico for a recruitment evening. I've read a bit on the forums about them. Are they a complete waste of time or should I give it a go? Desperate to start out but I have to make money, not spend it at the end of the day. Thanks for the advise so far.

My biggest customer has part of their warehouse let to a medical supplies firm and all they are allowed to use are City Sprint, its only about 6 vans a day but I know for a FACT they are paying £1.60 Plm and most of the work is for small vans.

They will give you a load of waffle about being able to backload/co load you and they will have to do that because their rates are atrocious, some will tell you they can and do, but you may have to wait around for ages for these

Nothing wrong with City Sprints business model or that price. The drivers who work for them are the ones with no common sense! It isn't hard being a busy fool. If the drivers refused to work other than at a sensible rate, they would have no choice other than to raise what they pay!
