I was looking back at prices charged and driverpay for 1998 and what we should be charging today to be on a par

Interesting stuff and does beg the question why oh why do we, as an industry, sell ourselves short.

Back in 98 drivers were on around 42-45p per mile (small van) when fuel was around 65p per litre. On that basis driverpay today should be around 90p per mile...which it isn't

And thats just based on fuel, nevermind the insurance hikes we've all seen in recent years.

So whats going on?
Why do we all feel that we can't pass on the costs to the customer, when we're giving the same service...and to some extent a better service what with the ability to do online bookings, automated emailed pod's and the like.

It's largely down to the fact that we're not regulated or licensed and can all be undercut by the "big boys".We all live in fear that if we put our prices up we're going to lose the work we've spent a long time getting.

Sadly the level of service the "smaller guys" give is secondary to price, and that for me is a shame. I know of charges as low as 77p per mile so christ knows what the driver is getting from that. Why charge so low?

I, like everyone else, feel that I am forced to keep prices down but also want to give a fair price to drivers because without good drivers I have no Business....my hands are tied.
My prices are approx 22% less than they should be as is driverpay.....

So thankyou Citysprint, TNT et all

I noticed a worrying trend yesterday on CX a hotshot job was posted with the payment on a take it or leave it basis,
it worked out at 0.56ppm with little prospect of a return it simply not viable.
well must admit I have been debt chasing and looking for other things to do as so far this week I have not turned a wheel!!

well i guess it stopped a lot of wasted calls but yes...worrying

It was obviously geared for somone going back home that way....but to need to rely on that is risky.

I know where my money is
I sincerely hope no one took it on
